Handicare Stairlifts: An Independent UK Buyer’s Guide

Handicare is one of the major European stairlift brands distributed in the UK, with Scandinavian engineering roots and a strong presence across the dealer network. They’re less heavily advertised on UK TV than Acorn or Stannah, but they’re a serious option — particularly for narrower stairs and where build quality matters more than headline price. This guide covers what they make, their corporate background, and what’s worth knowing before you spend.

Who Handicare are

Handicare’s stairlift business has Swedish and Dutch engineering roots. The brand began trading in Europe in the 1980s and became a major supplier across multiple markets over the following decades. UK operations are based in Kingswinford, West Midlands.

In 2021 the stairlifts division was acquired by Savaria Corporation, a Canadian-listed accessibility manufacturer (TSX:SIS). Savaria owns several other mobility and accessibility brands and operates globally. The acquisition didn’t change Handicare’s UK product line — the same models continue to be manufactured and serviced — but it placed Handicare within a larger international corporate group rather than as a standalone European business.

Unlike Acorn and Stannah, Handicare’s UK sales operate primarily through an authorised dealer network rather than direct-to-consumer. You’ll often encounter Handicare lifts via a local mobility retailer or independent stairlift installer rather than a Handicare-branded salesperson.

The Handicare stairlift range

Handicare’s UK range is broader than Acorn’s and broadly comparable in scope to Stannah’s.

Handicare 1000 (straight)

The 1000 is Handicare’s standard straight indoor model. Powered swivel seat, soft-start and soft-stop motors, fold-down rail option, and a slim rail profile that hugs the wall side of the staircase to minimise visual intrusion. Sometimes specified in slimline form for tighter Victorian terraces.

Handicare 1100 (straight, premium)

The 1100 sits above the 1000 with upgraded upholstery, larger seat options, and additional comfort features. Often specified for taller users or longer staircases where the standard seat would feel cramped.

Handicare Freecurve (curved)

The Freecurve is the standard curved indoor model. Each rail is custom-fabricated to fit the user’s staircase, including landings and quarter-turns at top or bottom. Lead time typically 4–6 weeks from survey to install.

Handicare Van Gogh (premium curved)

The Van Gogh is Handicare’s flagship curved model — sleeker rail design, premium upholstery options, larger seat, and additional safety features. Targets the higher end of the curved market against Stannah’s Sofia.

Handicare Outdoor

Weatherproofed indoor models adapted for external use, with covers and corrosion-resistant fittings. Standard configuration for front-door access steps and external garden flights.

Pricing and positioning

Handicare sits in the mid-to-upper market bracket. Standard straight 1000 lifts typically run from around £2,400 installed; the premium 1100 sits closer to £3,000–£3,500. Curved Freecurve installs typically run £4,500–£6,500 depending on rail complexity; the Van Gogh sits at the top of that range or above.

Pricing varies more than for direct-sale brands because Handicare lifts are quoted through independent dealers who set their own margins. This is a double-edged sword: a competitive local dealer may quote noticeably below a Handicare-equivalent direct-sale rival, while a less competitive one may land above Stannah on like-for-like specs. It’s worth getting more than one Handicare dealer quote if you’re seriously considering the brand.

After-sales support and warranty

Handicare lifts come with a 2-year manufacturer warranty as standard, with extended cover available at point of sale. Service is delivered through the dealer who fitted the lift, supported by Handicare’s UK technical operations.

The dealer model affects after-sales experience. The best dealers offer responsive local service; less established ones can struggle with parts supply or technical complexity. Worth asking the dealer about their typical call-out response time and confirming they service what they sell.

What to know before buying

The dealer model is the most important thing to understand about Handicare in the UK. You aren’t buying from Handicare directly — you’re buying from a local independent retailer who fits and services Handicare lifts. This affects pricing, warranty handling, service response, and the sales process. The build quality of the lift itself is consistent regardless of dealer; everything else varies.

Handicare lifts can be supplied zero-rated for VAT if the person using the lift has a long-term illness or disability — a 20% saving. The dealer should handle the paperwork; confirm it’s been applied when you receive the quote.
