Stannah Stairlifts: An Independent UK Buyer’s Guide

Stannah is the largest stairlift manufacturer in the UK and one of the most recognisable names in home mobility worldwide. If you’re starting to research options for yourself or a family member, you’ll almost certainly have come across them in the first handful of searches. This guide covers what they make, where they sit in the market, and what’s worth knowing before you spend.

Who Stannah are

Stannah is a privately-owned, fifth-generation family business based in Andover, Hampshire. The company was founded in 1867 by Joseph Stannah in London, originally making cranes and goods lifts for the docks. Stairlifts arrived later as the business expanded into home mobility, and the stairlift line has become Stannah’s best-known consumer product.

Today Stannah employs over 1,500 people in the UK and exports to more than 40 countries. Manufacturing and product development happen in Andover; the company also runs a national network of regional service centres covering installation, maintenance, and repair. That national footprint — and the fact that the engineers fitting and servicing your lift are employed directly by Stannah rather than subcontracted — is the single biggest reason people pay a premium for the brand.

The Stannah stairlift range

Stannah produces three main consumer stairlift models covering straight, curved, and outdoor scenarios. All are British-built and benefit from the same engineering team.

Stannah Siena (straight)

The Siena is the standard straight indoor model. Powered swivel seat at the top, soft-start and soft-stop motors for a gentle ride, optional powered fold-down rail at the bottom to reduce trip hazards, and a choice of seat upholstery. It’s the most-fitted Stannah model and what most homeowners end up with for a typical 1930s semi or post-war straight staircase.

Stannah Sadler (straight, narrow stairs)

The Sadler is an alternative straight model with a smaller, perch-style seat designed for narrow staircases where a full seat would intrude into walking space. Suited to users who can stand and lean rather than sit conventionally — useful for terraces under 700mm wide.

Stannah Sofia (curved)

The Sofia is Stannah’s curved indoor model. Each rail is custom-fabricated to fit the exact dimensions of the user’s stairs, including landings, half-turns, and full quarter-turns at top or bottom. Lead time is typically 4–6 weeks from survey to install. A slimline version is available for very narrow curved stairs.

Stannah Outdoor Stairlift

The outdoor model is a weatherproofed version of the straight indoor design, fitted with a waterproof cover and corrosion-resistant components. Commonly fitted to external front-door flights and garden access steps in hilly UK areas — Sheffield, Bristol, parts of London, the South Coast.

Pricing and positioning

Stannah sits at the premium end of the UK stairlift market. Quoted installed prices typically run from around £2,800 for a basic straight Siena to £6,500 or more for a fully-specified curved Sofia, depending on rail length, number of turns, and seat options. Outdoor models start in a similar bracket to straight indoors.

Stannah quotes reflect the company’s positioning as the market-share leader. A substantial nationwide network, a long manufacturing track record, and the ability to draw on its own engineers for after-sales service rather than third-party contractors are all built into the price. For homeowners who value the security of a large national company, the premium is often considered worth it; for those purely focused on the lowest price, other UK manufacturers come in cheaper on like-for-like specs.

After-sales support and warranty

Stannah include a 2-year warranty as standard on new stairlifts, with longer optional cover available at point of sale. After the initial warranty period, annual service contracts are offered through the same engineer network that installed the lift.

The size of Stannah’s national service team means call-out response times tend to be among the fastest in the industry, particularly outside major cities where smaller installers can struggle to maintain regional coverage. Reconditioned Stannah lifts are also widely available through Stannah’s own refurbishment programme and through independent dealers.

What to know before buying

Stannah operates a survey-led sales model. After requesting a quote, a regional engineer visits your home, measures the staircase, discusses options, and provides a written quote on the day. Decisions don’t need to be made at the visit — the quote is yours to consider.

Worth knowing: like all major UK stairlift manufacturers, Stannah lifts can be supplied zero-rated for VAT if the person using the lift has a long-term illness or disability. That’s an instant 20% saving. Stannah’s sales process handles the paperwork, but it’s worth confirming it’s been applied when you receive the quote.
